How can i get lose waves HELP PLEASE!?

I love how Cheryl Cole, Fearne cotton etc get long lose waves in there hair mines longish and im trying to find out how they do it as it looks casual and good for school. I don't no whether to buy the waving wand, i have also tried rollers they don't work help pleaseee :)) x
